I’m Dr. Pamela Hood, an associate professor of Philosophy at San Francisco State University.
My research field is Ancient Greek philosophy. My focus is on Aristotle, especially study on the intersection of language, metaphysics and epistemology in the conceptual problems Aristotle identifies in the Categories as well as those this intriguing text has created.
My research expands on work begun with my book, Aristotle on the Category of Relation. My long term research plan is to demonstrate the importance of the Categories in its own right and as a means of better understanding Aristotle’s epistemology, philosophy of language, metaphysics, and ontology. In my view, the text has been undervalued and research on it has been minimal, despite the significant role it played in the Jewish, Christian and Islamic thought in the Medieval period. Contemporary philosophers generally pay little attention to Aristotle’s Organon and even less to the Categories despite the fact that the latter gives, in miniature, an encyclopedic look at Aristotle’s thought and a unique locus from which to explore the development of Aristotle’s later thought.
